Why rent an office space when you can save the money by turning that guest room into a room where you can work on a day-to-day basis. Perhaps the best part of working from home is that you don’t have to commute. Not commuting can save you money on fuel, car insurance and a list of other car expenses – including tickets and traffic violations. However, the one main thing that you have to figure out when you set up a home office is what kind of furniture you need. Here are five things to consider when choosing furniture for your home office.
- What kind of work will you be doing? Depending on the type of work you do, you will need to purchase office furniture that reflects the purpose of your job. For instance, if you run a simple consulting business and can do most of your work from a computer, you may only need a desk, some lamps and maybe a table where you can place your printer. If you have a more complicated business, you may need more furniture.
- Is the room being used for another purpose when it is not an office? Some home offices are not so much a home office – they are more of an annex to a living room or family room. If this is the case, you probably want to find furniture that reflects this. You probably don’t want to fill the corner of your living room with a bunch of stuff. You may want to find a nice metal or wood roll top desk for sale, which can be closed when you are done working.
- Do you need a lot of storage? If you are an accountant or if you run a home based business that requires a lot of filing and storage, you may need to purchase more than just desks and tables – you may want to install filing cabinets along the walls. If you are a designer or run a jewelry business, you may need special cubby cabinets for things like lobster clasps, chains and more. Ideally, you want to make your home office as organized and as efficient as possible.
- Do you need your landlord’s permission before you drill or install? Before you purchase furniture or furniture equipment that you have to drill or nail into the walls, you want to ask your landlord whether it is okay or not. The last thing you want is to get evicted from your home or apartment. All it takes is a simple phone call or email.
- Is there enough space? It is also critical that you measure everything, so that you know exactly what you can and can’t fit. You certainly don’t want to purchase a bunch of office furniture and then realize you can’t fit everything – this will be time consuming and expensive. In the end, a simple roll of measuring tape will go a long way.
