4 Common Bathroom Design Mistakes to Avoid

If you’re thinking about doing a bit of house renovating and you’re on a budget, how about starting with a smaller room like your bathroom? Being that it is a place that you spend time every single day, we’re pretty sure that you want to feel comfortable as possible. Plus, there are some changes that you can make that will end up saving you money on your energy bills too.

However, before you get started looking into all of the bathroom design ideas that you can choose from, we wanted to take out a moment to offer a list of some bathroom mistakes that you should avoid. This way, you can be certain that you’ll end up with the results that you truly want. Check these out below:

Not choosing light colors. If there’s one room that tends to be a bit smaller than we would like, it’s usually the bathroom. That’s why it’s not a good idea to paint it a color that absorbs light. This would include dark colors like dark brown or shades of wine. Instead, opt for light colors. Ones that are shades of white or pastels will reflect the light and make your bathroom look bigger; especially if you paint the ceiling the same shade as the walls.

Not incorporating natural light. One mistake that a lot of people make is selecting window treatments that prevent natural light from coming into their bathroom. There are two main problems with this approach. For one thing, if you happen to have plants or flowers in your bathroom, they are not going to be able to get the Vitamin D that they need in order to grow (and also improve your indoor air quality). Also, without natural light, you will have to rely more on overhead lighting which can end up increasing your monthly energy costs. So, when choosing your window treatments, go with thin blinds, Roman shades or sheer curtains. If you don’t feel like those will provide you with enough privacy, consider getting your bathroom window professionally tinted. That way, you can look out but people on the outside will not be able to look in.

Not putting in energy-efficient items. Speaking of saving money on energy bills, going to a place like the Exotic Home Expo is a great place for some bathroom design ideas. And as you’re in the process of looking at light fixtures and bathroom accessories, if you were to speak with a customer sales associate about a mistake that you should avoid, one thing that they would probably tell you is that there aren’t a lot of people who make a point to pick up energy-efficient items like automatic faucets and low-flow showerheads. But if you do, it will definitely help to save you money on your water bills each month. You can read more about energy efficient bathroom products at Energy.gov. Just go to the site and put “bathroom” in the search field.

Not having enough storage. You don’t want your bathroom to have so much inside of it that you don’t have enough room for storage. So, whether it’s by expanding your closet, putting in a dresser or getting some cute wicker baskets, definitely provide storage space. Your bathroom is going to need it.
